In recent years aesthetic inquiry has grown both in quantity and scope and Contemporary Aesthetics intends to reflect this growth. By using modern computer technology, Contemporary Aesthetics aims to encourage new work in aesthetics and to disseminate it widely, easily, rapidly, and without cost, joining breadth of access to breadth of content.
As a discipline, aesthetics has moved far beyond the arts to new areas, such as environment, everyday life, popular culture, and comparative aesthetics. Aesthetic concerns now include the relations between ethical and aesthetic values, folk art, and the aesthetic relevance of primitive art. Inquiry in aesthetics embraces the popular arts as well as the aesthetics of recent and emerging arts, such as video art, computer art, and performance art.
Contemporary Aesthetics also hopes to reflect diverse traditions, such as Japanese, Chinese, and Indian, as well as aesthetics aspects of cultures and their arts that have not received much attention, such as Aboriginal, Inuit, and Balinese. Particularly welcome are constructive approaches to aesthetic issues that enrich and widen our aesthetic horizon.
Contemporary Aesthetics intends to promote scholarship that explores the range of aesthetic interests, pursuing theoretical issues and developing applications of aesthetic ideas. Material published here need not be bound by the constraints of traditional disciplines nor will it be judged by philosophical orientation or narrow standards of what constitutes good work. Our goals are openness, collaboration, and the communication of aesthetic ideas both within and among disciplines. Strong scholarship that makes a constructive contribution to aesthetic inquiry is welcome. So too, is original philosophical writing of high quality. The work of a future Nietzsche or Heidegger is as welcome as that of a Merleau-Ponty or Wittgenstein. The basic criterion for publication in Contemporary Aesthetics is quality of thought and expression on significant issues.
Contemporary Aesthetics extends a warm invitation to writers and scholars. A distinguished group of editorial advisors will referee submissions, observing high standards of scholarship and writing. We encourage clarity of organization and grace of expression. This journal intends to fill a need and make a significant contribution to aesthetic inquiry. We invite you to join in this effort.
